About Mechanical Engineering (Sandwich Pattern)

Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest disciplines in the engineering, science, and technology sector. It deals with physics and material science concepts for planning, designing, execution, analysis, and manufacturing machinery. Mechanical engineering with a sandwich pattern is a bit different in its curriculum than regular mechanical engineering. In mechanical engineering (sandwich pattern), students get an in-plant training session each semester to learn how different theory concepts are being applied in these engineering divisions. Engineers of sandwich patterns get better exposure to industries since they have greater knowledge of industry culture and its dynamics.

What is Mechanical Engineering (Sandwich Pattern)?

Mechanical engineering (sandwich pattern) is a full-time two-year undergraduate program, especially for those students who have a penchant for machinery and mechanical components. The course is designed to provide not only theoretical understandings of subject matter but also practical knowledge of its applications. Students are exposed to plant training sessions each semester which acts as a platform for students to get an in-depth understanding of concepts with real-time applications. Additionally, students also get two months of internship at the end of the sixth semester in their company choice. In the course based on a sandwich pattern, this internship is compulsory for all students. They work on different projects provided by companies according to their field of interest. In this course, students are taught various topics such as kinematics, tribology, industrial fluid power, turbomachines, power plants, energy conservation and management, CAD/CAM/CAE, designing of machinery, and vibration analysis with advanced computational methods. After completing the course, students will acquire and develop their careers in industries and research organizations. Students develop expertise in applying advanced engineering tools, computer programming languages, instruments, and different software. As this program emphasizes practical work, students will be able to address social and environmental issues, follow professional ethics and codes of conduct, and embrace lifelong learning for continuous improvement. Students also learn to work in a team and individually to execute solutions for different engineering problems.

Eligibility and Career in Mechanical Engineering (Sandwich Pattern)

Engineering in mechanical (sandwich pattern) is a bachelor degree program recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. It consists of four years divided into eight semesters with training sessions. Candidates willing to pursue this course must have passed their 10+2 with Physics, Mathematics, and English as compulsory subjects. Candidates must have secured a minimum of 45%-50% marks in aggregate or have a diploma in the engineering field with at least 45% marks. There are many opportunities for graduates in this field as this course provides more industrial exposure to students than regular classes. Students can be employed in different sectors like Automobile, Petroleum, Oil, Gas, Transport, Aircraft industries, Railways, etc., in India and abroad. Some government industries such as DRDO, RITES, ONGC Ltd, BPCL Limited, GAIL, NLC Ltd, Indian Oil, HPCL, NHPC, BHEL, NTPC Limited, WBSEDCL, Oil India, MECL, BAARC, THDC, Coal India Ltd, NALCO, etc. where students can apply and make a rewarding career. The major recruiters who also offer internship programs of two semesters are TATA Motors, Bosch, Volkswagen, L'OREAL, GM, Bosch, etc.
