About Material Science and Technology

Material science is the study of materials that are solid and such materials properties, both physical and chemical, and how to use them in new better products or existing products to make them better. Engineering in material science and technology incorporates physics, chemistry, and engineering for its purpose. Engineering in material science and technology can be called the base of every other engineering; hence it deserves a special place. It is an excellent career path to choose.

What is Material Science and Technology?

Material science and technology engineer does the essential works such as manufacturing and process of materials. They are involved in every other branch of engineering, and they are that important in engineering. If they make a slight mistake, it will affect every other aspect of the said product. And it may end up in an at most disaster. For example, a small error in the manufacturing of any part of a flight will take the cost of many lives. Material science and technology engineer selects raw material for the manufacturing of a product. For that, they must check if the raw material is suitable for the product's purpose if it has any slight defects and then chooses the suitable raw material, design them most efficiently, and then manufacture the product.

Eligibility and Career in Material Science and Technology

As with all of the engineering programs, this too has UG and PG programs. The main UG programs are B.Tech in Metallurgical and Materials Science and B.E in Metallurgical and Engineering and Materials Science. And the main PG programs are M.Tech in Material Science, M.Sc in Applied Chemistry and Materials Science, and M.Tech in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. As every course have an eligibility criterion, these are the eligibility criteria for UG and PG programs in these fields. Applicants should complete their 12 in science stream from a recognized board. They should at least have scored 50% in the science subjects and English. Eligibility criteria for M.Tech programs, Applicants should have a B.E or B.Tech in the courses mentioned above or in chemical engineering or nanotechnology. They should have at least scored 50%. Eligibility criteria for M.E programs, Applicants should have a B.E or B.Tech or other equivalent degrees with a minimum of 55%. JEE Main, JEE Advanced is the preliminary entrance exam for UG programs. At the same time, GATE becomes the major entrance exam for the PG program but, there are also state level and university level or institute level entrance exams for admission in UG and PG programs. Since it is the base of every other engineering branch, there is countless scope in this field. From research to manufacturing, the scope spreads its wings. Here are some significant scopes in this field. Research scientist for graphene and similar compounds. Carbon is the most crucial element ever found. As proof, a big part of chemistry is dedicated to studying carbon and its compounds named organic chemistry. And the most critical combination of carbon is graphene. Hence, the field of research for graphene and similar compounds is so essential. Biotechnology, environmental chemistry, and biochemistry are only some significant branches in this field, and their importance is well known. But whatever career path you choose, the salary will be in the stretch of 4 lakhs to 16 lakhs.
