About Infrastructure Engineering

Infrastructure engineering can be defined as the viral branch of engineering and science that coordinates all infrastructure systems like buildings, apartments, water & sewage system, power & gas system, etc., for a given engineering project. Infrastructure engineering combines all the activities from planning, designing to environmental management of projects. Infrastructure engineering ensures that all these systems should work simultaneously with each other along with ecological sustainability. Infrastructure engineers can be employed by public or government facilities.

What is Infrastructure Engineering?

Bachelor of technology in infrastructure engineering is a full-time four-year-long course divided into eight semesters. This course deals with designing and building firms and advanced infrastructures such as buildings (commercial & residential), highways, roadways, etc., that help in the comprehensive development in civil engineering. It is designed in a combined way where students get fundamental knowledge of material science, soil mechanics, etc., and advanced and specialized subject matters such as Civil infrastructure design, Highways infrastructure design, etc. This course allows students to learn about the basics of designing, estimating, construction materials for extensive civil structures like bridges, roads, buildings, and many other construction projects. This program mainly focuses on planning, designing, and managing large buildings, bridges & highways, transportation engineering, townships, and other construction projects with environmental sustainability. Students also learn practical infrastructure modelling, industrial training, building law & ethics, infrastructure safety & maintenance during the program.

Students also visit construction sites, industrial sites, projects, and internships that train them for a natural work environment. The students in this course also profoundly explore soil & fluid mechanics, hydraulics engineering, applied geology, surveying & remote sensing, environmental engineering, and advanced computation techniques. Students are also taught many topics like lifeline structures, including bridges, dams, canals, and transportation infrastructure like railways, airports, highways, roads, docks & harbours, etc. After completing infrastructure engineering, students will be highly skilful in project and construction management. They will address the challenges that emerge during building planning, execution, estimating, and management.

Eligibility and Career in Infrastructure Engineering

Infrastructure engineering is also known as civil infrastructure engineering, which is a full-time bachelor course in engineering approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.  Candidates are required to fulfil some essential eligibility criteria to enrol in this course. Candidates must have passed senior secondary (10+2) education from a recognized board with a minimum of 60% marks. The students must have studied physics, chemistry, mathematics, and English as compulsory subjects. Candidates require to successfully enrol and qualify JEE main exam or any other equivalent entrance exam. Students need to crack the entrance exam to get a seat in prestigious colleges in India or get direct admission to private universities. Qualified engineers in this field can get jobs in both government and private sectors. Some of the standard designations on which companies hire infrastructure engineers include structural engineers, construction engineers, civil engineers, construction project managers, etc. Interested candidates can also pursue a master's program and a doctorate in this field through the GATE examination. An average salary of 4-5 PLA can be expected after completing graduation in infrastructure engineering.
