Engineering in microwave and optical communication can be defined as the branch of engineering and science that focuses on the working principles of microwave components, detectors, optical fibres, and optical sources. Fibre optics have played a crucial role in the telecommunication sector in the past few decades, resulting in a tremendous revolution. Visual communication is not only used in long-distance links but also useful in approaching the individual end-user. As an engineering discipline, microwave and optical transmission are challenging, including microelectronics, quantum electronics, semiconductors, and optics.

What is Microwave & Optical Communication?

Engineering in the microwave and optical communication is a full-time two-year program designed to impart basic concepts of optical fibres, light, and its different effects and dispersion. It emphasizes the understandings of the simple optical communication link. The course is suitable for students who want in-depth knowledge of fibre optics, microwave engineering, and mobile communication. In this course, students learn various topics such as telecommunication and fibre optics, light propagation, optical laws, different types of losses like attenuation, bending, core & cladding, scattering, absorption, etc. microwave system and frequencies, microwave amplification, quantum electronics, laser electronics, optical computing, and telecommunication system modelling and simulation. Optoelectronics and Nano-optics with laser application are studied in detail that helps in designing and maintenance of integrated circuits of various kinds.

The course is designed to equally impart both theoretical and practical knowledge about the subject matter. At the end of the program, students are exposed to dissertation or thesis work or internships by companies that help them face real-time challenges. After completing the course, students will be able to apply the S parameters to analyze the characteristics of microwave components and use the different solid-state devices for the generation and amplification of microwave signals. Interested candidates can do further study or research work in other areas like remote sensing, microwave engineering, optical communication, laser instrumentation, radar system, etc.

Eligibility and Career in Microwave & Optical Communication

Engineering in the microwave and optical communication is a post-graduation program of two years approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. Candidates willing to pursue this course must have fulfilled some criteria: candidates must have completed their bachelor's degree in the engineering and technology field or any other relevant field with at least 60% marks or equivalent CGPA by a recognized institution. Applicants must have a qualified GATE with a valid score. Well-trained engineers in this field may be employed in Robotics companies, wireless communication companies, analogue electronics companies, embedded systems, optical communication companies, and colleges & universities. Most companies hire microwave and optical engineers for the post of optical engineer, process engineer, optical fabrication technician, optical scientist, product development engineer, Application Engineer, Hardware Engineer, Service Engineer RF, and Category Manager.
