About Sound Recording and Engineering

Sound recording and engineering can be defined as the specialized discipline of technology that deals with the several aspects and technicalities of sound and music like editing, mixing, cutting, recording, curating, reproducing, and adding sound equalization and electronic effects to audio files. Most people believe that sound engineering is only confined to music. Still, there are many more sectors like gaming, film industry, digital games, television, radio, etc., where principles of sound engineering are being applied.

What is Sound Recording and Engineering?

Engineering in Sound Recording is a technical study of the different aspects of nature, sound, and its characteristics. It is a specialized field of engineering in which students get acquainted with the technical facets of sounds like editing, mixing, recording, and mastering sound. This course is designed for students willing to learn different strands of live sound engineering, sound system engineering, music recording, and audio technology. This course emphasizes both theoretical and practical knowledge of sound engineering that helps students apply various concepts in real-time scenarios.

In sound recording engineering course, students are taught a variety of topics such as fundamentals of audio production, recording, auditing, and mixing of sound, Foley recording and dubbing, different sound manipulation techniques, recording technology, basic electronics and decibels, automation, analogue, and digital console, sound design, and synthesis with basic production techniques (camera, mic, and other relevant equipment). Students also get hands-on experience from several workshops conducted by industries that prepare them for future opportunities.

Eligibility and Career in Sound Recording and Engineering

Sound recording and engineering is a bachelor's degree program approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. To take admission in this program, candidates are required to fulfil some eligibility criteria: the applicant must have passed 10+2 with the compulsory subject like physics from any recognized board of India. The candidates applying for the master's degree program must have completed graduation in engineering or technology or any relevant stream with a minimum of 50% marks. Candidates who are in the final semester can also apply for the master's course. Candidates should have a valid GATE or any equivalent exam score to get selected for this course.

Even students can also get advance certificates in this field.  Since engineering in a sound recording is a slightly less chosen option by the students, several job opportunities are up for grabs. An interested and skilled professional candidate can make his promising career in this field.

There are many designations in companies that are fulfilled by sound recording engineers, for instance, sound engineers, studio managers, production assistants, acoustic consultants, multimedia developers, music editors, sound effect editors, broadcast engineers, location sound engineers, and many more. Some of the sectors where candidates can easily be employed after completion of the course such as music recording studio, film & movies, radio & television industries, gaming field, event management company and so on. Though salary depends on many factors, an average of 3-5 LPA can be expected.
