Material Science or often called as Material Science and Engineering in India is a branch of engineering which deals with the properties of matter and application of materials in various domains of science and engineering.

Material Science Engineering

The course mainly focuses on the relation between the structure of matter at an atomic or molecular scale and macroscopic properties of materials. Material engineering includes coursework from applies physics, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. By this, it is considered as an interdisciplinary field and is capable of making hot career opportunities for students because of the vast application.

With the introduction of nanoscience and nanotechnology, material science has gained momentum in technical institutions in India. Material science is also considered as an integral part of forensic engineering and failure analysis.

Material Science deals with functions like extracting, developing, processing and testing of different materials and minerals with are used in the production of consumer goods ranging from washroom utilities to aeroplanes, computers, war guns and the list go on.

How to Join

One who wants to join Material Engineering should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 55% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top colleges or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

Graduate Aptitude Test (GATE) is the national level entrance examination for admission to postgraduate courses by the IITs and IISc in India. Admission to these institutions is offered based on the score secured in GATE by the candidate.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospects

Material Science Engineering can begin working at manufacturing and technical support industries and later move on to management, development and sales according to their taste in each sector. Material Engineering will have the opportunity to work at the forefront of many industries as every new product released are derived from some set of materials. The advancement we see in telecommunication and cellular networks become possible with the contributions of materials science engineers from around the world.
