ABOUT INDUSTRIAL SAFETY

Industrial safety can be defined as the management of all the activities, operations, and events that can be used to provide safety measures to personnel or employees in any industry to protect from hazards, risks, and accidents during industrial operations. It can be further elaborated as taking care of numerous health, safety, and environmental facets of the personnel working in different sectors such as construction activities, engineering industries, petrochemical, chemical industries, etc. Expeditious technological development and extensive mechanization in these industries resulted in various complex safety, health, and environmental issues. Therefore, these industries require trained and skilled professionals who can address the challenges that emerge from these industries, like adverse impact on the environment, employee's health, and many other aspects of industrial safety.

WHAT IS INDUSTRIAL SAFETY?

Engineering in industrial safety is a one-year program introduced by the Government of India. This course can be pursued by aspiring students and employees who want to make a rewarding career in the sector of occupational risks and health issues. Well-being or safety is one of the essential aspects of engineering asset management. Safety can be achieved by design, or hazards can be prevented through design during industrial activities. These are at the core of sustainable and safe engineering management.  It is designed to emphasize the need for essential and practical aspects of risk management techniques, monitoring safety and health operations, and safety management operations. It also aids in improving the standard of the employees in terms of health and provides strength to general safety measures. This course aims at providing information on different aspects of safety in engineering systems. It focuses on the tools and tactics used to prohibit unsecured operations and events during industrial processes. Students are exposed to various subject matters during the course, such as hazard identification techniques (HAZOP, FMEA, etc.), safety function deployment, virtual reality application, electrical safety, applied ergonomics, fire risk & control with environmental issues and management. After completing this course, students will be able to guide and assist site engineers and managers in a safe and secure workplace with the best environmental sustainability.

ELIGIBILITY AND CAREER IN INDUSTRIAL SAFETY

As mentioned above, engineering in industrial safety is a one-year program by GOI that empowers industries with skills and awareness of workplace safety, environment, and health aspects related to industries. There are no specific eligibility criteria to undertake this course except completion of 12th from a recognized board. After completing this course, students can find several job opportunities, mainly in the industrial sector and in IT and consulting firms. Interested candidates can work in the areas of auditing, compliance, and strategic planning, corporate HSE support, industrial hygiene and toxicology, safety planning & implementation, and crisis management & emergency response. The candidate can also make an illuminating career in the risk management sector, corporate planning sector, technology development, and research & innovation sector. Many prestigious companies hire an engineer in this field in India, such as Reliance Industry, ONGC, Coal India, Vedanta, ACB India, Jindal Steel Works, L&T, Amazon, Sodexo TATA consulting engineers, and so on.
