Food is one of the important essentials and a necessity for all forms of life and for survival. In our case, the process of cultivating, harvesting, processing, storage and preparation of food materials of sometimes complex. There is a need for a strong understanding and training of the process and solving various problems that may arise during the processing of food materials. In this scenario, food scientists are the ones responsible for making safe and nutritious food in abundance.

Food Technology is an undergraduate/ postgraduate engineering course that deals with food engineering and sciences. Food Scientists or Food Technocrats that we see today are graduates in Food Technology from top reputed colleges in India or around the world. One who is looking to pursue a career in food technology skills is the best suit for this course.

Food Technology

The course is specifically designed to introduce the students to food-related technologies and their specifications practising in our world now. Food Technology is related to the study of areas like packaging, nutrition, chemical balances of food, microbiology etc. and gives a wider understanding of raw materials and food products. Students are also exposed to subjects like food marketing, processing and much food-related research.

How to Join

One who wants to join Food Technology should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 50-60% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top colleges or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospects of Food Technology Engineers

Job opportunities for well qualified Food Technology graduates are increasing year by year. Across the world, there’s a steady decrease in agricultural land and this is pushing the organic chemists and food technologists to find or improve the methods by which the raw materials are converting into processed food. As becoming a home economist, you can be an expert in diabetics and nutrition, also do the testing of food and recipes according to the instruction on the containers. Food Technology engineers hired by food processing organisations are required for planning, designing, maintaining and improving the processing systems which are currently in use.

Private companies like Amul, Cadbury, Britannia, Nestle etc, recruit fresher Food Technology graduates and provide them with training to work in their organisations around the world. Food Technology professionals are paid fairly in India and abroad according to their skillset, expertise and experience in the field.
