Mining Engineering is a very interesting field of engineering which deals with the theory, science, application and technology of processing and extraction of natural resources from the environment. The course equips the students with ways to improve ad innovate mining techniques and technologies. Mining engineering involved topics like drilling and blasting, materials handling, rock mechanics, mine health and safety, mine ventilation, mine cost engineering, ore reserve analysis, operations analysis, mine planning and minerals processing, etc.

Mining Engineering

The course is concerned with teaching the students on how to up with the upcoming demands for minerals of all kinds in an efficient, safe and sustainable manner. The course also equips the students with a tendency to look forward to innovative methods in mining that mitigate the resultant damage which can occur by the mining process.

Students who are looking for a career in the mining industry and see their future in innovating technologies and techniques that can make the mining activities efficient and the environment-friendly can join the course. Those who what to contribute towards the environment protection can also opt for this course and make a difference. Students who select this course are required to have an eye for detail and should have good management skills.

How to Join

One who wants to join Mining Engineering should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 50% in physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top college or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospects of Mining Engineers

As the course suggests, mining engineers are expected to put their knowledge in scientific theories, engineering fundamentals and developed technologies to recover natural resources in a safe, sustainable and profitable manner. Mining engineers are hired to organisations which are engaged in the construction industry with the development of roads, railroads, tunnels and underground chambers, etc. Companies like the ONGC, Coal India, Geological Survey of India, HCL, IPCL, Neyveli Lignite Corp., NALCO, TISCO, TELCO, Reliance, etc. hire mining engineering graduates from top institutes in India. There are also many more job opportunities are available for mining engineers abroad in petroleum and excavation areas.
