Structural Engineering is an undergraduate/ postgraduate course offered by many of the top engineering institutes in India for specialization in Civil Engineering. It is primarily a sub-division of civil engineering where the students are taught to predict, comprehend and estimate the strength, durability, stability of the structures that are erected on buildings and nonbuilding structures. This information is used to assimilate those designs with other fellow engineers and to oversee the ongoing projects on-site as well.

Structural Engineering

The course includes advanced finite element analysis, structural mechanics, structural dynamics, reinforced and pre-stressed concrete, steel structures, tall buildings and towers, constructing wind and earthquake resistant designs ensuring the structural reliability along with the application of computer programmes in Structural Engineering. As it is the subfield of Civil Engineering, Structural engineering encompasses the design, planning, execution and maintenance of structural works. It develops infrastructures which are having importance on the society in terms of aesthetics, functions, sustainability and economics.

IIT, Chennai and SRM University are two of the top institutes offering structural engineering course in India. Students who are having a special interest in the construction of special structures in the aspect of civil engineering can opt for this course. Command over skills in material sciences and mathematics are advantages to aspiring candidates of structural engineering.

How to Join

One who wants to join Structural Engineering should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 60-75% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top college or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospects of Structural Engineers

Structural Engineers are hired to design the frameworks of buildings, pipelines, bridges and constructions like that so that it can support by own and are resistant to weather conditions. The public safety concern is the prime concern in such constructions and the engineers should take the aesthetics and cost-efficiency into consideration. Structural engineers can specialize with the type structures they design and will be allowed to work on projects ranging from hotels to nuclear plants. With gaining experience and qualification, one can be hired in posts like Planning Engineer, Project Engineer, Site Engineer etc.
