Agricultural Engineering is the field of engineering which deals with the study of the agricultural process and technological practices used in food processing and efficient processing of food materials. As agriculture is being one of the important participants in the Indian economy, it is needless to say that a career in Agriculture in our country is nothing but bright and shining.

The study of agricultural engineering includes the various disciplines in animal and plant biology, mechanical, civil, electrical and chemical engineering with knowledge on agricultural principles. The course allows the students to do an analysis on different types of soils and planes present across different demographics of an area or an entire nation. This assessment will give the student more insight into improving the aspects and technologies regarding the growth of agriculture and other verticals of the same.

BE/ME and BTech/MTech in Agricultural Engineering is similar to each other are having the same career prospects, value and scope both in India and abroad. Some of the institutes offering Agricultural Engineering courses are Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, Chandigarh University, LPU Jalandhar, Assam University etc.

How to Join

One who wants to join Agricultural Engineering should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 50% in Chemistry and Mathematics and Biology. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top colleges or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospects of Agricultural Engineers

There are more public sector jobs are available for Agricultural engineers for BTech and MTech Agricultural engineers in Agricultural departments o various states governments. Other governmental departments where you can easily land in an officer post are Food Department, Research Department, Dairy Board, Coir Board etc.

When considering the private sector, fertilizer firms, R & D units of food processing firms, agricultural machinery manufacturing firms etc. are the prime recruiters. Agricultural engineers are getting paid fairly and are between ₹2.5 - 4.5 lakhs per year. And like any other field, expertise, experience and skillset is important and can take you to a good position in no time.
