ABOUT ILLUMINATION ENGINEERING

Illumination engineering is a unique branch of science and engineering that can utilise luminous energy-containing visible wavelengths (lights). The specified electrical engineering branch fulfils the need to significantly conserve lighting energy and meet government regulations while supplying appropriate light levels and achieving aesthetical requirements.

The expansion of advanced lamps, luminaries, and lighting controllers, many of which are "efficient energy savers", also helps a trend seek help from lighting engineers when designing buildings. The field of illumination engineering is comprehensive as many industries actively depend on it, such as automotive, architecture, displays, general lighting, consumer, lithography, and bio-optics.

These days, illumination engineering is emerging faster in various sectors such as solid-state lighting, photovoltaic, organic LED displays, energy-efficient lighting, daylighting, and bio-medical application of illumination.

WHAT IS ILLUMINATION ENGINEERING?

Illumination engineering is a full-time two years master's degree program approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Interested candidates can also pursue an advanced diploma in this field. Illumination engineering is a field that comprises various concepts from the development of sources, designing of light and luminaries to the measurement of lighting conditions and machine vision.

The present era is so advanced that all humans depend on electricity and lighting to operate, from lighting our workplaces to lighting up the roadways for nighttime operations to illuminating our digital devices on which we rely mostly these days. Illumination engineering is designed to create skilled professional electrical engineers who can address the challenges of efficient utilisation of light energy. This course shed light on various topics such as radiant energy and visible spectrum, photometry and spectrophotometry, photocells, and laws of illumination.

Students are taught several exterior lighting, interior lighting, energy conversion to light, colour, eye, and vision, different light sources like fluorescent, electric discharge, arc lamps, lasers, etc., energy-efficient lamps, and many more. Students explore and analyse practical information about measurement and mapping of different lighting sources and designing energy-saving illumination systems in a very efficient way during the course.

ELIGIBILITY AND CAREER IN ILLUMINATION ENGINEERING

As introduced earlier, illumination engineering is a post-graduation program of two years that aims at providing effective solutions for an energy-efficient world. Candidates who want to pursue this program must have passed their bachelor's degree with a minimum of 60% marks in engineering and relevant field approved by a recognised board. A valid GATE score is preferable by the universities at the time of admission. Interested candidates can also pursue a diploma in this sector after completion of 12th.

As illumination engineers have their relevance and role in the industries, plenty of job opportunities are present in this sector. After completing engineering in the electrical branch, aspiring candidates can grab a chance in the government and private sectors. Many government regulatory bodies like DRDO, SAIL, PGCIL, BHEL, etc., recruit skilled illumination engineers in their organisations.

Candidates can make a rewarding career in MNCs and IT industries like Phillips, HCL technologies, SYSKA, SAMSUNG, INTEL, etc., who recruits engineers on a beautiful salary package. A candidate can expect an average salary from 6 to 8 LPA.
