Automobile engineering or automotive engineering course is the study of manufacturing, designing and operating automobiles such as passenger vehicles, motorcycles, trucks, etc. and their particular engineering subsystems. The course incorporates electrical, mechanical, software electronic and safety elements.

Mechanical Engineering

Students who are having a natural interest in automobiles like cars, motorcycles, buses and for mathematics, mechanics and electronics are preferred in this field. Mechanical Engineering is a branch of vehicle engineering which is extremely technical and students must be organised and systematic in their work propensities. Those who are more creative in their field of mechanics and can come up with innovative solutions to the potential issues and designs are the best suit for the course.

Subjects which are handled in this field of engineering are environmental science and engineering, production technology, applied thermodynamics, mechanics of machines, fluid mechanics and machinery, fuels and lubricants, automotive engine components, automotive diesel engines, automotive electrical systems, automotive materials and metallurgy, automotive transmission, automotive pollution and control, quality control, manufacturing processes and reliability engineering etc.

How to Join

One who wants to join Automobile engineering should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 50% in physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top college or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospect of Automobile Engineers

The basic job prospectus of an automobile engineer is to design, test and develop vehicles or it’s components from concept to the production stage. After introducing the vehicle into the market, it needs improvement, it is also done by automobile engineers by analysing the performance and other data.

The automotive engineering field offers extensive career opportunities for best performing candidates in production plants, automobile manufacturing industries, service stations, private transport companies, public transport corporations, motor vehicle departments, insurance companies, etc.

If you are equipped with required computer skills in CAM (Automation), Computer Aided Design (CAD), ERP, you can find better job opportunities in computer raided industries as designers.

Many foreign automobile companies are such as Audi, Volkswagen, BMW, Renault, etc are focusing on making India for manufacturing, a splendid future is awaiting you as a qualified automobile engineer. Doing an MBA after the engineering course will be highly beneficial for your career in the field.
