It is a branch of engineering which deals with the study, design and construction of unit processes involve biological organisms and molecules. Biochemical engineering is termed as the interdisciplinary study of chemical, biochemistry and microbiology engineering branches.

Biochemical Engineering

The BTech program is a 4-year full-time course that equips the students on the outline and construction of unit processes that involves biology, chemistry, molecules or engineering knowledge, including everything from raw materials preparation and to product recovery.

How to Join

One who wants to join BTech biochemical Engineering should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 50% in physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top colleges or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

Career Prospect of Biochemical Engineers

A biochemical engineer is responsible for the design and development of new chemical products which can be used by the public or for any other reserved purposes. The career of a biochemical engineer includes researching, developing, documenting and making products that are derived from a combination of chemicals that are either lab-made or organic, to benefit society or the public on large scale.

Mostly, companies or organisations which are engaged in research and development hire biochemical engineers to work in process and product development. They will get to work with research and manufacturing personnel to formulate information about the products that are developed. Also, they will get the opportunity to work with fellow chemists, biologists and engineers to innovate new technologies and products.

Workplace Environment

A fresh biochemical engineer will be required to work with experienced biochemical engineers and will be included in formal meetings and seminars to get more information on the employer organisation. As a fresher, one will be assigned more complex projects to develop new designs, solve complex problems and make decisions that are in line with the organisation’s goals and objectives. This will also award the new engineer to gain the required experience in the field of biochemical engineering.

Product manufacturing companies also hire qualified biochemical engineers for product advancements and to develop more innovative products. Biochemical engineers should always be on alert because sometimes they will have to work with hazardous chemicals or materials that require extra care and attention. They will have to be extra careful to ensure a safe working environment and a safely developed product line. On gaining more experience and qualifications according to the requirement of your career, you can also expect a white-collar work environment in any of the multi-national companies in India or abroad.
